Active Solutions for Preserving Internet Content

Welcome

The International Internet Preservation Consortium was founded in 2003 by 12 institutions who acknowledged the importance of international collaboration for preserving Internet Content for future generations. This group chartered the IIPC to fund and participate in projects and working groups to accomplish the goals of the consortium, which include:

  • to enable the collection, preservation and long-term access of a rich body of internet content from around the world.
  • to foster the development and use of common tools, techniques and standards for the creation of international archives
  • to be a strong international advocate for the initiatives and legislation that encourage the collection, preservation, and access to internet content
  • to encourage and support libraries, archives, museums, and cultural heritage institutions everywhere to address internet content collecting and preservation.

Now 38 members strong, the IIPC has focused its work in the last three years on four major areas: Harvesting, Access, Standards, and Preservation. Much of the content we will hear today is the result of the work of the IIPC Preservation Working Group members.

We come together today, taking advantage of the synergy between the wide-ranging preservation interests of the iPRES community, who met here the last two days, and the focused interest and work of the IIPC community in preserving web archives.

We’d like to thank the organizers of iPRES and our colleagues at the California Digital Library for their support during the planning of this event, and the IIPC program committee who helped select the program.
