Wendy Seltzer<\/strong>, W3C<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Do parties have the right to be forgotten from a smart contract\u2019s ledger? Will taxidermy preserve a Pok\u00e9mon or a Cryptokitty outside its native habitat? How do we maintain historical records when \u201ctruth isn\u2019t truth\u201d and social networks claim sovereignty over the platforms from which they irregularly block users? Can we inoculate before copyright takedown-bots go viral?<\/p>\n

By examining some of the challenges to archiving the near and possible futures, this talk aims to help us prepare.\u00a0 We\u2019ll look at some bugs and features of current legal code, and consider law and policy recommendations to help keep the web open to archiving even as it changes.<\/p>\n

\n

Wendy Seltzer<\/strong>\u00a0is Strategy Lead and Counsel to the\u00a0World Wide Web Consortium<\/a>\u00a0(W3C) at MIT, improving the Web\u2019s security, availability, and interoperability through standards. As a Fellow with Harvard\u2019s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, Wendy founded the\u00a0Lumen Project<\/a>\u00a0(formerly Chilling Effects Clearinghouse), helping to measure the impact of legal takedown demands on the Internet. She seeks to improve technology policy in support of user-driven innovation and secure communication.<\/p>\n

She serves on the Advisory Board of Simply Secure; served on the founding boards of the\u00a0Tor Project<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Open Source Hardware Association<\/a>, and on the boards of ICANN and the World Wide Web Foundation.<\/p>\n

Wendy has been researching openness in intellectual property, innovation, privacy, and free expression online as a Fellow with Harvard\u2019s\u00a0Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society<\/a>, Yale Law School\u2019s\u00a0Information Society Project<\/a>, Princeton University\u2019s\u00a0Center for Information Technology Policy<\/a>\u00a0and the University of Colorado\u2019s\u00a0Silicon Flatirons Center for Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship<\/a>\u00a0in Boulder. She has taught Intellectual Property, Internet Law, Antitrust, Copyright, and Information Privacy at\u00a0American University Washington College of Law<\/a>,\u00a0Northeastern Law School<\/a>, and\u00a0Brooklyn Law School<\/a>\u00a0and was a Visiting Fellow with the\u00a0Oxford Internet Institute<\/a>, teaching a joint course with the\u00a0Said Business School<\/a>,\u00a0Media Strategies for a Networked World<\/a>. Previously, she was a staff attorney with online civil liberties group\u00a0Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a>, specializing in intellectual property and First Amendment issues, and a litigator with Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel.<\/p>\n

Wendy speaks and writes on copyright, trademark, patent, open source, privacy and the public interest online.
