The University of North Texas was one of the first academic institutions in the United States to archive web sites, beginning in 1997 with the CyberCemetery, an archive of government web sites that have ceased operation (usually web sites of defunct government agencies and commissions that have issued a final report).  The UNT Libraries also collaborated with the Library of Congress, the Internet Archive, the California Digital Library, and the U.S. Government Printing Office to harvest sites that would quickly change at the end of the presidential terms in 2008 and 2012. These websites are available from UNT’s End-of-Term Archive. In addition to the CyberCemetery and the End-of-Term Archive, the UNT Libraries also archives selected websites in thematic areas corresponding to its collection strengths, such as resources pertinent to the state of Texas and the local North Texas area. UNT developed the URL Nomination Tool to allow communities of subject specialists to collaboratively recommend URLs for upcoming web harvests.
