Web Archiving Initiatives at Sound and Vision

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (Sound & Vision) joined the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) in 2016 and co-organised their first webinar with the IIPC in February 2017.

Sound & Vision is a cultural-historical organization of national interest. It collects, preserves and opens the audiovisual heritage for as many users as possible: media professionals, education, science and the general public. In addition, Sound & Vision develops and disseminates knowledge in the area of audiovisual archiving, digitization and media history.

The collection contains more than a million hours of television, radio, music and film from the beginning in 1898 until today. All programs of the Dutch public broadcasters are ingested digitally every day. Individuals and institutions entrust their collection to Sound & Vision as well. Sound & Vision ensures that the material is optimally preserved for (re)use. Broadcasters, producers and editors use the archive for the creation of new programs. The collection is also used to develop products and services for a wide audience, such as exhibitions, applications and various websites.

Web archiving has been part of the collection policy since 2011. Sound & Vision preserves websites as a part of the context collection to its audio visual collection. The web collection started out with a focus on websites of broadcasters, specific radio or television programs and audiovisual production companies, but the scope has since been broadened to cover the Dutch online media landscape as a whole. Next to broadcasting related pages, you’ll for instance find websites about Dutch video game culture, media history or journalism. Because of our focus on the media domain, most of the websites we’re selecting are frontrunners in the use of the latest technical trends in web development. Meaning we encounter an increasing number of dynamic components and usage of mixed media and social media feeds in the websites we wish to collect. Additionally, we’re working together with creators of interactive art and immersive online storytelling projects. This means we’re constantly exploring new ways to best preserve dynamic web content.

Another important part of Sound & Vision’s web collection is made up of videos from social media platforms like YouTube and Tiktok. We work together with influencers and other online content creators to collect (a selection of) their videos. This way thousands of web videos are preserved for research and re-use now and in the future.

In February 2023, Sound & Vision is reopening a super modern, unique and inspiring Media Museum in Hilversum. The very first museum in the world that continuously adapts to the visitor's actions. Initiatieven voor webarchivering bij Beeld & Geluid

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid (Beeld & Geluid) sloot zich in 2016 aan bij het International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) en organiseerde in februari 2017 hun eerste webinar samen met het IIPC.

Beeld & Geluid is een cultuurhistorische organisatie van nationaal belang en verzamelt, bewaart en ontsluit het audiovisuele erfgoed voor zoveel mogelijk gebruikers: mediaprofessionals, het onderwijs, de wetenschap en het grote publiek. Daarnaast ontwikkelt en verspreidt Beeld & Geluid kennis op het gebied van audiovisuele archivering, digitalisering en mediageschiedenis.

De collectie bevat meer dan een miljoen uur televisie, radio, muziek en film vanaf het begin in 1898 tot op heden. Alle programma's van de Nederlandse publieke omroepen worden dagelijks digitaal geregistreerd. Ook particulieren en instellingen vertrouwen hun collectie toe aan Beeld & Geluid. Beeld & Geluid zorgt ervoor dat het materiaal optimaal bewaard blijft voor (her)gebruik. Omroepen, producenten en redacties gebruiken het archief voor het maken van nieuwe programma's. Daarnaast wordt de collectie gebruikt voor het ontwikkelen van producten en diensten voor een breed publiek, zoals tentoonstellingen, applicaties en diverse websites.

Webarchivering is sinds 2011 onderdeel van het collectiebeleid. Beeld & Geluid bewaart websites als onderdeel van de contextcollectie bij de audiovisuele collectie. De webcollectie begon met een focus op websites van omroepen, specifieke radio- of televisieprogramma's en audiovisuele productiebedrijven, maar de scope is inmiddels verbreed naar het Nederlandse online medialandschap als geheel. Naast omroepgerelateerde pagina's vindt men bijvoorbeeld websites over de Nederlandse videogamecultuur, mediageschiedenis of journalistiek. Door deze focus op het mediadomein zijn de meeste websites die geselecteerd worden koplopers in het gebruik van de laatste technische trends in webontwikkeling. Dat betekent dat Beeld & Geluid steeds meer dynamische componenten en het gebruik van mixed media en social media feeds tegenkomt in de websites die worden verzameld. Daarnaast wordt er samengewerkt met makers van interactieve kunst en immersieve online storytelling projecten. Dit betekent dat Beeld & Geluid voortdurend op zoek is naar nieuwe manieren om dynamische webinhoud zo goed mogelijk te bewaren.

Een ander belangrijk deel van de webcollectie van Beeld & Geluid bestaat uit video's van social media platforms als YouTube en TikTok. Beeld & Geluid werkt samen met influencers en andere online content creators om (een selectie van) hun video's te verzamelen. Zo blijven duizenden webvideo's bewaard voor onderzoek en hergebruik voor nu en in de toekomst.

In februari 2023 heropent Beeld & Geluid een supermodern, uniek en inspirerend Mediamuseum in Hilversum. Het allereerste museum ter wereld dat zich continu aanpast aan de acties van de bezoeker.
