KB Web Collection XS4ALL as UNESCO World Heritage

In November 2022, KB’s web collection XS4ALL homepages became part of the Dutch Memory of the World list, as part as UNESCO world heritage. This was a very special moment, for it was the first time that a digital born collection received this status. XS4ALL is one of the eldest internet providers in the Netherlands, but also one of the few provides from the early days that still exists. The thousands of homepages that KB has archived, were made between 1994 and 2001, and show a unique insight in the early period of Dutch online culture.

An interesting example from the XS4ALL web collection is a homepage from 1995. This is a virtual house where the visitor can navigate through. The homepage is from Liesbet Zikkenheimer, who was an important pioneer on the internet, industrial designer and artist. Due to missing scripts, the website no longer worked as it should. Thanks to a reconstruction by Johan van der Knijff, who is a researcher on digital preservation at KB, can the website still be rendered. The design of this homepage was very innovative. For example, there are the navigation possibilities, the interactive elements (and the interaction itself is still preserved, like the graffiti on the loo!), the combination of analogue and digital art, and the innovative use of text and visual content. The design contains early digital art, a guest exhibition with photography and photos of graffiti from Amsterdam in the alley behind the house (which was very typical for this period).

KB-webcollectie XS4ALL werelderfgoed 

In november 2022 werd de webcollectie XS4ALL-homepages opgenomen op de Nederlandse Memory of the World-lijst als UNESCO-erfgoed. Dit was een bijzonder moment, want daarmee kreeg de eerste digitaal geboren collectie van geschreven bronnen in de wereld deze status. XS4ALL is één van de oudste internetproviders van Nederland, maar ook één van de weinige vroege providers die nog bestaat. De duizenden homepages die de KB heeft binnengehaald zijn gemaakt tussen 1994 en 2001 en geven een unieke inkijk in de begintijd van de Nederlandse internetcultuur. 

Een interessant voorbeeld uit de XS4ALL-webcollectie is een homepage uit 1995 in de vorm van een ‘3D-huisje’ waarin genavigeerd kon worden: een soort vroege voorloper van de Metaverse. Deze homepage, “Liesbet's atelier”, is van een Liesbet Zikkenheimer, een belangrijke internetpionier, industrieel ontwerper en kunstenares in de Nederlandse webgeschiedenis. Door ontbrekende scripts werkte de website niet meer volledig, maar dankzij een reconstructie van Johan van der Knijff, onderzoeker op het gebied van digitale preserving bij de KB is de website nog steeds te bekijken. Wat baanbrekend was in het ontwerp van de homepage, waren de navigatiemogelijkheden, de interactieve elementen (waarvan de interactie ook bewaard werd, zoals graffiti op de WC!), de combinatie van analoge en digitale kunst en het innovatieve gebruik van tekst en beeld. Zo bevat het ontwerp vroege digitale kunst, een gasttentoonstelling met fotografie en foto's van Amsterdamse graffiti in het steegje achter het huis (zeer herkenbaar voor die periode).
